William Morris
William Morris is an English textile designer, poet, novelist, translator and activist associated with the British Arts and Crafts Movement. He was instrumental in reviving traditional British weaving methods and art. His literary contributions helped establish the modern fantasy genre, while also helping it gain acceptance for socialism in Britain. Morris was born in Walthamstow, Essex, to a wealthy middle class family. He was heavily influenced by medievalism while studying the classics at the University of Oxford, where he joined the Birmingham department. After graduating from college, he married Jane Burden and developed close friendships with Pre-Raphaelite artists Edward Burne-Jones and Dante Gabriel Rossetti and with neo-Gothic architect Philip Webb. Webb and Morris designed the Red House in Kent where Morris lived between 1859 and 1865, before moving to Bloomsbury, central London.
