Winifred Lawson was an English opera and concert singer of the first half of the 20th century. His performances as soprano in the opera Gilbert and Sullivan are best remembered as a member of the D'Oyly Carte Opera company from 1922 to 1932. She started her career as a concert singer. In 1920, she made her debut as Countess Almaviva in The Marriage of Figaro, appeared in Purcell's first performance The Fairy-Queen in over 200 years, and played Guinevere in The Round Table. Lawson soon played a series of roles, from playing Marguerite in Faust to Bessie Throckmorton in Merrie in England. She was D'Oyly Carte's principal soprano for almost a decade, performing 10 of the best Savoyard operas. The only other role she played during this time was Lili in Lilac Time, although she also started her radio career in 1929 on BBC radio.
