Walter Frederick George Williams, is an English comedian and actor working under the stage name Bill Maynard. He appeared in British sitcoms in the 1970s and 80s, including Oh No It's Selwyn Froggitt and The Gaffer, as well as five films in the Carry On series. After a hiatus from television work in the late 1980s, Maynard starred in the series Heartbeat from 1992 to 2000, reprising his role in the sequel The Royal from 2002 to 2003. Williams was born in Surrey, but lived primarily in Leicestershire throughout his personal life. He maintained two consecutive marriages, before becoming single for the rest of his later years. After having a motor-impaired stroke, he withdrew from the theater, especially appearing on television when possible. He died in hospital at the age of 89 after an accident in March 2018
