Michael Jack Schmidt is a former American third-class professional baseball player who played 18 seasons in Major League Baseball for the Philadelphia Phillies team. Schmidt is a 12-time All-Star and three-time National League Player of the Year, and he's known for his combination of strength and solid defense. As a famous player, he had 548 home runs and 1,595 attempts, and led NL in eight indoor races and four times in RBI. As a puncher, Schmidt has won the National League Golden Gloves award for third baseman 10 times. Schmidt was elected to Baseball Fame Hall in 1995 and is considered by many to be one of the third greatest baseball players in baseball history. Having an unusual hitting position, Schmidt turned his back slightly to the pitcher and rocked back and forth behind him awaiting the tee shot. Standing far into the batter's box, he was barely able to corner him by throwing the ball inside.
