In January 2018 he was inducted into the Danish Sports Hall of Fame. In 2019 he was inducted into the FIA Hall of Fame. He retired in 2014.

He managed to fully recover, partly in thanks to the type of collar in his car, and was able to participate in the 2007 Le Mans Race. He has the nickname Mr. Le Mans and is widely considered to be the best driver to have ever raced at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
