James Hynes is an American novelist. He was born in Okemos, Michigan and raised in Big Rapids, Michigan. He currently lives in Austin, Texas, where he teaches creative writing at the University of Texas. He has also taught at the Iowa Writers Conference, University of Michigan, University of Miami and Grinnell College. Hynes received a Bachelor of Philosophy from the University of Michigan and an M.F.A. from the Iowa Writers Conference at the University of Iowa. His first novel, The Wild Colony Boy, deals with terrorism in Northern Ireland. Hynes's next three books, Publish and Perish, The Lecturer's Tale, and Kings of Infinite Space, combine satire and horror. Her most recent novel, Next, was published in 2010. Her essays and literary reviews have appeared in the Washington Post, The New York Times, the Boston Review, and the online magazine Salon. During the 1980s, he wrote on television for Michigan Voice, Mother Jones, and In These Times.

He is best known for his novels Publish and Perish: Three Tales of Tenure and Terror, The Lecturer's Tale, King's of Infinite Space, and Next. He is an American creative writing professor and novelist. The Wild Colonial Boy, his debut novel, is set in Northern Ireland and deals with terrorism.
