John La Farge is an American artist whose career covers illustrations, murals, interior design, painting and famous books on his travels in Asia and related topics. other art. La Farge is famous for producing stained glass, mainly for churches on the US East Coast, starting with a large commission for Henry Hobson Richardson 's Trinity Church in Boston in 1878, and continuing in thirty years. La Farge designed stained glass as an artist, colorist and technical innovator, who had a patent granted in 1880 for the possibility of stacking the glasses. This patent will be key to his dispute with contemporary Louis Comfort Tiffany and a rival. La Farge rented the premises in the Tenth Street Studio Building when it opened in 1858, and it became a longstanding presence in Greenwich Village. In 1863 he was elected to the National Academy of Design; in 1877, he co-founded the American Artists Association, frustrated by the conservatism of the National Academy.

From 1899 to 1904, he was president of the National Society of Mural Painters, a group of American painters and stained glass window makers. In 1904, he was one of the first seven artists to be elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
