Mary Boykin Chesnut is an American author best known for her book Her Civil War Diary, a "vivid picture of a society in the dire struggle for life. or death. " She describes the war from within her elite at the Southern Farmers' Association, but includes all walks of life in her book. She is married to a former US senator and an officer in the Southern Union. Chesnut completed the final form of his book in 1881–1884, based on his diary written during the war years. It was published in 1905, 19 years after his death. New editions were published after the discovery of his articles, in 1949 by the novelist Ben Ames Williams and in 1981 by the historian C. Vann Woodward. Her annotated edition of the magazine, Mary Chesnut's Civil War, won the Pulitzer Prize for history in 1982 .

She was dubbed the most important Confederate writer by various literary experts after her posthumously published Civil War diaries. Mary Chesnut's Civil War, an annotated collection of her articles edited by historian C. Vann Woodward, earned the Pulitzer Prize for History in 1982.
