He was the head football coach at Southern Oregon Pedagogical University - now known as the University of Southern Oregon - in Ashland, Oregon for five seasons, from 1946 to 1950. His record as a coach in Southern Oregon Oregon is 27–16–1. Simpson graduated from Southern Oregon and the University of Oregon in 1937 and 1939, respectively. Before training in southern Oregon, he trained at high schools in Oregon, including Ashland and Medford.
