William Lendrum Mitchell is a United States Army General who is considered the father of the United States Air Force. Mitchell served in France during World War I and when the conflict ended, commanded all of the US air units there. After the war, he was appointed deputy director of aviation services and began advocating increasing investment in air power, believing it would become important in future wars. He especially supported the bomber's ability to sink battleships and organized a series of bombardments on stationary ships to test the idea. He annoyed many military administrative leaders with his arguments and criticisms, and in 1925 he was dismissed from the brigade brigade position to colonel status permanently for non-compliance.
