Caroline Norton
Caroline Elizabeth Sarah Norton, Lady Stirling-Maxwell was an English social reformer and active author in the early to mid-19th century. Norton left her husband in 1836, after which he sued his best friend Lord. Melbourne, then Prime Minister Whig, for talking crimes. The jury denied this request, but she could not ask for a divorce and was denied access to her three sons. Norton's vigorous campaign led to the passage of the Infant Custody Act of 1839, the Marriage Cause Act of 1857, and the Married Women's Property Act of 1870. Norton transmitted inspiration for the Justice in the House of Lords mural by Daniel Maclise, who chose it because she was considered by many to be a famous victim of injustice.
