Charles Leroy Thomas was a major in the United States Army, serving as a company captain during World War II. In 1997, he received the Medal of Honor, the country's highest military decoration for courage, for his actions on December 14, 1944 near Climbach, France. Thomas and six other black Americans who served in World War II were awarded the Medal of Honor on January 12, 1997. The Medal of Honor was awarded by President Bill Clinton after being awarded to Thomas on May 13, 1997 1 year 1997 at a Medal of Honor ceremony for seven recipients at the White House in Washington, DC. The seven recipients were the first and only black Americans to receive the WWII Medal of Honor.
