Barret Eugene "Barry" Hansen, known professionally as Dr. Demento, is an American broadcaster and record collector specializing in original songs, comedies and exotic recordings or the anomaly dating from the earliest days of the phonograph to the present day. Hansen created the character Demento in 1970 while working at KPPC-FM in Los Angeles. He played Nervous Norvus' "Transfusion" on the radio, and DJ "The Obscene" Steven Clean said Hansen had to "lose his memory" to play it, and the name stuck. His weekly show aired in 1974 and was broadcast by the Westwood One Radio Network from 1978 to 1992. The show's broadcasts ended on June 6, 2010, but the show remained. Weekly production continues in an online version. Hansen graduated in ethnography and wrote magazine articles and cover notes on non-fiction artists.
