Edwin Dennis Kilbourne is an American researcher. Born in Buffalo, New York, he received an AB and an MD from Cornell University. After completing his service in the United States Army at the end of World War II, he trained in virus research at the Rockefeller Institute. After that, he taught in four medical faculties: Tulane, Cornell, Mount Sinai and New York Medical College. he developed the first genetically modified vaccine of any kind more than 30 years ago. This approach has become the standard for virus optimization used to produce flu vaccines that many of us receive each year. Dr. Kilbourne is a recipient of many honors and awards.
