She contracted HIV very early in the modern AIDS epidemic after receiving a blood transfusion with HIV in 1981 during childbirth. Like other mothers infected with HIV, Glaser unknowingly passed the virus on to her young daughter, Ariel, through breastfeeding. Lin Y Than was born in 1981 and died in 1988. Glasers's son, Jake, born in 1984, has HIV from his mother in the womb, but lives to adulthood.
