Colonel Sir George Everest CB FRS FRAS FRGS is an English surveyor and geographer who served as the General Manager of India between 1830 and 1843. He is best known for naming the Mountain. Everest, the tallest mountain in the world, in its honor. After receiving military training in Marlow, Everest joined the East India Company and came to India at the age of 16. Eventually, he was appointed William Lambton's assistant in the Great Trigonometric Survey, and replaced Lambton as director of the survey in 1823. Everest was mainly responsible for surveying the meridian arc from the southernmost point of India to northern Nepal, a distance of about 2,400 km, a mission that lasted from 1806 to 1841. He was appointed as the survey general. of India in 1830, retired in 1843 and back to England. In 1865, the Royal Geographic Association renamed Peak XV - later identified as the highest peak in the world - in honor of Everest.
