Gérald Godin is a Quebec poet and politician. Born in Trois-Rivières, Quebec, he worked as a journalist for La Presse and other newspapers and magazines. His most important book of poetry, Les cantouques: poèmes en langue vertical, popular and sometimes French, was published in 1967. He was among those arrested under the War Measures Act during the crisis. October 1970 During the 1976 provincial elections in Quebec, he won a seat as a candidate for the Parti Québécois Party, beating outgoing Prime Minister Robert Bourassa in the electoral district of only Mr. Mercier. He held various minister positions in the governments of René Lévesque and Pierre-Marc Johnson. His partner is a Quebec singer, Pauline Julien. As a poet he won the Prix Québec-Paris for his 1987 work They Just Asked to Burn. Godin died of brain cancer in October 1994 .
