John Leonard "Jack" Swigert Jr. is an American astronaut of NASA, test pilot, mechanical engineer, aerospace engineer, US Air Force pilot and politician. In April 1970, as the pilot of the Apollo 13 command module, he became one of the twenty-four astronauts who flew to the moon. Before joining NASA in 1966, Swigert was a civilian test pilot and fighter pilot in the National Air Defense Force. After leaving NASA, he ran for Senate but lost to Bill Armstrong in the primary election. He then ran for Congress, but while running, he was diagnosed with cancer. He won the election for Colorado's new District 6 in 1982, but died before being sworn in
