Joseph Dominick Pistone, also known by his secret alias Donnie Brasco, was a former US FBI agent who worked undercover from September 1976 to July 1981, as part of a major infiltration. Bonanno and to a lesser extent the Colombo crime family, two of the Five Mafia Families in New York City. Pistone was an FBI agent for 17 years, from 1969 until his resignation in 1986. The evidence Pistone gathered has led to more than 200 indictments and more than 100 convictions of Mafia members - and some of those responsible for his infiltration have also been killed by other bandits. Pistone has long been a pioneer in the work of secrecy. Former FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover, who died in 1972, didn't want FBI agents working under the hood due to the risk of agents becoming corrupt; Pistone's work then helped convince the FBI that the use of undercover agents rather than relying solely on informants was an important tool for law enforcement.
