Kristina was born in New York City and raised in Savannah, Georgia, where she and her mother moved when she was 11. She is Norwegian, Italian and Irish. At the age of four, Kristina began to learn classical violin. She sang in church and school choirs. In 1999, she joined the spirit costume The Looters, often supporting singer Rosa King on tour. In 2001, Train performed a showcase in New York for Blue Note Records. Executives Bruce Lundvall and Arif Mardin later invited Train to sign the Blue Note. The former student left school to pursue music full-time, moved to New York City and signed with the Blue Note.
