Makau W. Mutua was a Kenyan American Professor at SUNY Buffalo Law School and Dean of the Faculty from 2008 to 2014. He teaches international human rights, international business transactions and international law. He is vice-president of the American International Law Association and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. He is a second generation scholar of the Third World approach to international law, which critiques the colonial foundations of existing international law. In 2016, he made an unsuccessful offer for the position of Chief Justice at the Supreme Court of Kenya. Mutua faced criticism and litigation during her tenure as dean and professor at Buffalo Law School.
