Born in Alabama and raised in Ohio, Matthews joined the 10th Cavalry Regiment at the age of 15, after being recruited at a racetrack in Lexington, Ky. Stationed in Arizona, he joined General John J. Pershing's Mexican expedition to hunt down Mexican General Pancho Villa. Later, he was transferred to Virginia, where he looked after the horses of President Roosevelt and First Lady Eleanor, as well as a member of the Buffalo Drum and Trumpet Corps. At the end of his quarantine, he served in combat operations in the South Pacific during World War II and reached the rank of sergeant. He is recognized as an excellent marksman and knight.
