Matteo Ricci, is an Italian Jesuit priest and one of the founding figures of Jesuit missionaries in China. He created the Kunyu Wanguo Quantu, a 1602 world map written in Chinese characters. He is considered by the Catholic Church to be the servant of God. Ricci arrived in the Portuguese colony of Macao in 1582, where he began his missionary work in China. He became the first European to enter the Forbidden City from Beijing in 1601 when he was invited by Emperor Wanli, who asked him to serve in fields such as imperial astronomy and calendar science. He converted a number of high-ranking Chinese officials to Catholicism. He has also worked with several Chinese elites, such as Xu Guangqi, to translate Euclid's elements into Chinese for the first time in history as well as Confucian classics into Latin. .
