Sir Michael Kemp Tippett was an English composer who became famous during and shortly after World War II. Throughout his life he was sometimes ranked alongside his contemporaries Benjamin Britten as one of the best British composers of the twentieth century. Among his most famous works are the oratorio A Child of Our Time, Corelli's Fantasia Concertante, and St. John's Wedding opera. Tippett's talent grows slowly. He revoked or canceled his first works and was 30 years old before one of his works was published. Until the mid-1950s, his music was mostly lyrical, before moving into a more quiet and experimental style. New influences, including jazz and blues after his first visit to the US in 1965, became increasingly apparent in his compositions.
