Stephen Crane is an American poet, novelist and short story writer. Throughout his short life, he wrote notable works in the realist tradition as well as early examples of American naturalism and impressionism. He is recognized by modern critics as one of the most creative writers of his generation. The ninth surviving child of Methodist's parents, Crane started writing at the age of 4 and published several articles at the age of 16. Little interest in university studies was, although he was active in a fraternal association, he left Syracuse University in 1891 to work as a journalist and writer. Crane's first novel was Bowery's 1893 story, Maggie: A Girl of the Streets, which critically acclaimed as the first work of American literary naturalism. He gained international fame in 1895 for his novel Civil War, The Red Badge of Courage, which he wrote without any combat experience.
