Walter Dean Myers is the most famous children's book writer with the literary genre for teenagers. He was born in Martinsburg, West Virginia, but raised in Harlem, New York. His difficult childhood caused him to write and his teachers encouraged him to develop this habit to express himself. He has written more than a hundred books, including picture books and non-fiction. He has five times won the Coretta Scott King Award for African American Writers. His 1988 novel The Fallen Angels is one of the most frequently controversial books in the United States due to its fluent language and authentic description of the Vietnam War. Myers is the third US National Ambassador for Children's Literature, serving in 2012 and 2013. He also served on the advisory board of the Children's Writers and Illustrators Association.
