Walter Krueger
Walter Krueger, an American soldier and officer in the first half of the 20th century, commanded the United States Army in the Southwest Pacific region during World War II. He rose from the rank of Second Soldier to the rank of General in the United States Army. Born in Flatow, West Prussia, German Empire, Krueger immigrated to the United States in his youth. He enlisted to serve in the Spanish-American War and served in Cuba, then re-enlisted to serve in the American-Philippine War. He was promoted to second lieutenant in 1901. In 1914 he was posted to the Pennsylvania Army National Guard. His regiment was mobilized on June 23, 1916 and served along the Mexican border. After the United States began war with Germany in April 1917, Krueger was assigned to the 84th Infantry Division as an assistant to the G-3 general staff, then as a Chief of Staff.
