Her credits include a comedy album, four specials, three Comedy Center, and a variety of television dramas in which she has taken on a variety of roles including producer, director and presenter. Born in Washington, D.C., Cummings pursued a career in comedy in Los Angeles after graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, where she studied with the intention of becoming a journalist. After starting playing in 2004, she has been a regular guest at the Chelsea roundtable recently. She then created, produced, and starred in NBC's Whitney, a sitcom in which she portrayed a semi-fiction version of herself. The series ran for two seasons before being canceled in 2013. At the same time, Cummings created the CBS sitcom 2 Broke Girls, which also debuted in 2011 and ended in 2017
