Sonia Rolland is a French actress of Rwandan origin and Miss France in 2000. She is also a candidate for the Miss Universe contest. She is the first African native to win the Miss France pageant. Born in Kigali, Rwanda, to a Rwandan mother and French father, Rolland and her family fled the country due to security concerns related to the genocide in Rwanda, especially because her mother was Tutsi people. In 1990, they moved to the neighboring country Burundi. With the growing unrest leading to the civil war in Burundi, they moved to France in 1994. At the age of 13, Rolland and his family moved to Burgundy in the small town of Cluny. In October 1999, Sonia Rolland won the beauty pageant "Miss Burgundy" which allowed her to compete for the Miss France 2000 title and at the age of 18, she was the first African woman to win. . In the Miss Universe 2000 competition held in Cyprus, Rolland was in the top 10 semi-finalists, ranked 9th in the final.
