Allan David Bloom is an American philosopher, classical and scholar. He studied with David Grene, Leo Strauss, Richard McKeon and Alexandre Kojève. He then taught at Cornell University, University of Toronto, Tel Aviv University, Yale University, École normale supérieure de Paris and University of Chicago. Bloom has supported the idea of teaching good books and is famous for his critique of contemporary American higher education, his views reflected in his 1987 bestseller, The Closing of the American Mind . Characterized as a conservative in the mass media, Bloom denies himself as a conservative and claims that what he seeks to defend is "theoretical life." Saul Bellow has written Ravelstein, a key novel based on Bloom, his friend and colleague at the University of Chicago.
