In the 2017 Virginia elections, she was elected to the Virginia House of Representatives, winning the 13th Democratic District primary election on June 13 and the general election on November 7. First transsexuals elected to the Virginia General Assembly. and in January 2018, he became the first person to be elected and served while openly transgender in the state legislature of the United States.
