Oğuz Atay is the pioneering author of modern novels in Turkey. His first novel, Tutunamayanlar, appeared in 1971-1972. Never reprinted in its life and controversial among critics, it is the best-selling book since the new issue came out in 1984. It has been described as "perhaps the most famous novel in twentieth century Turkish literature": this reference is due to an ongoing UNESCO investigation: "it poses a challenge. It is serious for even the most skillful translator with the kaleidoscope of familiar people and of sheer size. ”In fact, three translations have been published so far: in Dutch, with the title Het leven in stukken, translated by Hanneke van der Heijden and Margreet Dorleijn; in German, as Die Haltlosen, translated by Johannes Neuner; in English, as The Disconnected, translated by Sevin Seydi: an excerpt from it won the Dryden Translation Award 2008 .
