Raúl Ricardo Alfonsín Foulkes is an Argentinian lawyer and politician who served as President of Argentina from December 10, 1983 to July 8, 1989. He was the first democratically elected president in over seven years. Year of military dictatorship and considered "the father of modern democracy in Argentina". Thoughtfully, he is identified as a progressive and a social democrat, serving as the leader of the Radical Citizens' Coalition from 1983 to 1991, 1993 to 1995, 1999 to 2001, with a policy known as Alfonsímism. Born in Chascomús, in the province of Buenos Aires, Alfonsín began studying law at La Plata National University and graduated from the University of Buenos Aires. He was affiliated with the Radical Citizen Coalition, joining Ricardo Balbín's side after the party split. He was elected vice-legislature of the province of Buenos Aires in 1958, during the presidency of Arturo Frondizi, and vice-state during the presidency of Arturo Umberto Illia.
