Charles Edward Coughlin, commonly known as Father Coughlin or Father Dai, is an American Canadian Catholic priest based in the United States near Detroit. He was the founding priest of the Little Flower Church National Temple. He was one of the first political leaders to use radio to reach a mass audience: by the 1930s, about 30 million listeners listened to his weekly broadcasts. He was forced to stop broadcasting after his rhetoric became anti-Semitic and fascist. Coughlin was born in Canada to working-class Irish parents. He was ordained a priest in 1916 and in 1923 was assigned to the Little National Flower Sanctuary in Detroit, Michigan. Spurred on by cross burns staged by Ku Klux Klan, Coughlin began distributing his lectures. As his shows became more political, he became more and more popular.
