Vik Muniz is a Brazilian artist and photographer. Initially as a sculptor, Muniz became interested in representative photographs of his work, eventually focusing exclusively on photography. Working primarily with unique materials like ketchup, diamonds, magazine coins, chocolate syrup, dirt, and more, Muniz creates works of art, reference paintings of former owners, and celebrity portraits. , among others, then photographs them. His work has achieved both commercial and critical acclaim, and has been featured around the world. He is currently being represented by New York and Brazil-based Galeria Nara Roesler. In 2010, Muniz appeared in the documentary film Waste Land. Directed by Lucy Walker, the film highlights Muniz's work at one of the largest landfills in the world, Jardim Gramacho, on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. The film was nominated for the Oscar for Best Documentary Film at the 83rd Academy Awards.
