Known as the second top-scoring tanker ace in the history of the former Soviet Union, he served in the Red Army primarily during the lead-up to and the remainder of the second World War. Later that year he would suffer an extreme brain and spinal cord injury that, once recovered from, he chose to remain in the military service. He would eventually retire at the rank of Lt. Colonel and would later work for the Minsk Auto Works manufacturer company.

He would rise through the ranks and continue to train in command and combat. Russia entered the war against the Nazis, which they referred to as the Great Patriotic War in July of 1941.
