Frederick Lee "Fred" Shuttlesworth is an American civil rights activist who has led the fight against racism and other forms of racism as a minister in Birmingham, Alabama. He co-founded the Southern Catholic Leadership Conference, initiated and instrumental in Operation Birmingham in 1963, while continuing to fight racism and alleviate human problems. Homeless in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he served as a pastor in 1961. He returned to Birmingham after retiring in 2007. He helped Martin Luther King Jr. in the civil rights movement. Birmingham - Shuttlesworth International Airport was named in his honor in 2008. The Fred L. Shuttlesworth Human Rights Award from the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute is presented annually in his name.
