Herta Müller is a Romanian German novelist, poet, and essayist who received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2009. Born in Nițchidorf, Timiș District in Romania, her mother tongue is German. Since the early 1990s, she has gained international fame and her works have been translated into more than 20 languages. Müller is known for her work depicting the effects of violence, cruelty and terrorism, often within the framework of the Socialist Republic of Romania under the repressive regime of Nicolae Ceaușescu that she herself experienced . Many of his works are from the German minority perspective in Romania and are also a representation of modern German history in Banat and Transylvania. His critically acclaimed 2009 novel The Hunger Angel describes the deportation of minority Germans from Romania to Soviet lands during the Soviet occupation of Romania for use as German forced labor. .
