Pia Merete Kjærsgaard is a Danish politician who served as Speaker of the National Assembly of Denmark from 2015 to 2019, and former leader of the Danish People's Party. She is the co-founder of the Danish People's Party and led it from 1995 to 2012. She has become one of Denmark's most prominent politicians in recent years, for her consistent and firm stand against multiculturalism and immigration, as well as for the support of parliament. With the center-right governments of Anders Fogh Rasmussen and Lars Løkke Rasmussen from 2001 until 2011. His success inspired anti-immigration and anti-Muslim movements across Europe. On August 7, 2012, Kjærsgaard announced his resignation as head of the Danish People's Party. She appointed Kristian Thulesen Dahl as her successor and he took office on September 12, 2012, promising to stay the course set by Kjærsgaard.
