Rodrigo de Rato y Figaredo is a conservative Spanish politician and banker who served in the Spanish government as Minister of Economy and Vice President from 1996 to 2004. He was CEO of the International Monetary Fund from 2004 to 2007 and Chairman of Bankia from 2010 to 2012. Rato was arrested on April 16, 2015 for fraud and embezzlement and money laundering. His case is still pending a year after his name was published in the Panama Papers. Despite previous assurances that he did not own companies in tax havens, he apparently used two foreign companies to avoid taxes on the millions of euros held abroad. It is alleged that he owed taxes to the governments of Spain and Panama. On February 23, 2017, Rato was found guilty of embezzlement and sentenced to 4.5 years in prison. In September 2018, the verdict was upheld by the Supreme Court of Spain. And Rato went to jail on October 25, 2018
