She moved to Los Angeles as a teenager, eventually graduating from the University of Southern California with a BFA in theater. Dena has been married for 25 years and is the mother of four children, including a son with autism, a daughter, an adopted daughter from Vietnam and an adopted child from Ethiopia. Her current non-fiction book Momaholic: Crazy Confessions of a Helicopter Parent was published April 14, 2012. Dena was previously the lead author of the daytime soap operas Days of Our Lives and One Life. to Live. In February 2015, Soap Opera Digest confirmed Higley's imminent return in Days of Our Lives, this time alongside Josh Griffith. The couple began writing for the series on February 16, 2015, with their documentary airing on August 19, 2015. Higley was fired again in January 2017; She was replaced by Ron Carlivati.

She is well known for her work as the lead writer on the daytime drama Days of Our Lives. Beginning in 1985 and continuing into the 2010s, she worked as a head writer in various positions. In honor of her work, she was nominated for many Daytime Emmy and Writers Guild of America awards.
