In retirement, she combined her two interests by writing two botany textbooks titled Yearly Botany and Practical Botany, which later became popular in Europe and translated for schools in France.

She is most known for her novel The War-Time Journal of a Georgian Girl, which was published in the United States at the turn of the century (1908). She was a well-known southern author who had stories and articles published in both the New York World and Godey's Lady's Book.
