The grandson of the philosopher Moses Mendelssohn, Felix Mendelssohn was born into an eminent Jewish family. He grew up without religion until age 7, when he was baptized as a Reformed Christian.

Song Without Words and the overture The Hebrides are among the works of this early Romantic German musical genius. The Leipzig Conservatoire was founded by him.
