George Armstrong Custer was an officer and commander of the US Army cavalry during the American Civil War and the American Indian War. Custer graduated from West Point in 1861 before graduating from his class, but when the Civil War was just beginning, immediately trained officers were ordered. He worked closely with General George B. McClellan and General Alfred Pleasonton in the future, both recognizing his qualities as a cavalry commander, and being named a volunteer brigade commander at age 23. Just days after being promoted, he fought at the Battle of Gettysburg, where he commanded the Michigan Cavalry Brigade and, though outnumbered, defeated J. E. B. Stuart's attack on what is today known as the Eastern Cavalry Battlefield. In 1864, Custer served in Operation Overland and in Sheridan's Army in Shenandoah Valley, defeating Jubal Early at Cedar Creek.
