George Bernard Shaw, known as Bernard Shaw, is an Irish playwright, critic, activist and political activist. His influence on Western theater, culture and politics lasted from the 1880s until his death and beyond. He has written more than 60 plays, including major productions such as Man and Superman, Pygmalion and Saint Joan. With a lineup combining both contemporary satire and historical allegory, Shaw became the leading playwright of his generation and in 1925 was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Born in Dublin, Shaw moved to London in 1876, where he struggled to become a writer and novelist, and began a rigorous process of self-education. In the mid-1880s he became a respected theater and music critic. After a political awakening, he gradually joined the Fabian Society and became its main advertiser. Shaw wrote plays for many years before making his first public hit, Arms and the Man, in 1894.
