He composed many genres of sacred and secular music, and his contributions to the development of the prelude and choral fugue earned him a place among mandarin composers the most important of the Central Baroque period. Pachelbel's music was loved throughout his life; he had many students and his music served as a role model for composers in southern and central Germany. Today, Pachelbel is best known for Canon in D, as well as Chaconne in F minor, Toccata in E minor for organ, and Hexachordum Apollinis, a set of keyboard variants. He was influenced by composers from southern Germany, such as Johann Jakob Froberger and Johann Caspar Kerll, Italians like Girolamo Frescobaldi and Alessandro Poglietti, French composers and composers from the Nuremberg traditions.

Baroque composer and organist best known for"Canon in D", his contribution to the south German organ tradition. He is regarded as one of the most significant contributors to the middle Baroque era for his fugue and chorale prelude compositions.
