General John Burgoyne was an officer, playwright and politician of the British Army, serving in the House of Representatives from 1761 to 1792. He acted in the Seven Years War for the first time in several battles battle, especially during the Portuguese campaign of 1762. Burgoyne is known for his role in the American Revolutionary War. He devised an invasion plan and was tasked with commanding a force moving south from Canada to separate New England and end the uprising. Burgoyne advanced from Canada, but his slow movements allowed the Americans to muster forces. Instead of coming to the aid of the master plan, the British Army in New York moved south to capture Philadelphia. Burgoyne fought two small battles near Saratoga but was surrounded by the Americans and was not relieved, and his entire 6,200 men surrendered on October 17, 1777.

He was best known for his failed leadership of British troops during the Saratoga Campaign during the American Revolutionary War, but he was also a politician and playwright during his lifetime. He was a member of the British House of Commons for numerous years and wrote dramatic works such as The Heiress and The Maid of the Oaks.
