Napoleon Lajoie, also known as Larry Lajoie and nicknamed "The French," is an American second professional player and manager. He played in the Major League baseball tournament for the Philadelphia Phillies, the Philadelphia Athletics and the Cleveland Naps from 1896 to 1916. He led the Naps football team from 1905 to 1909. Lajoie was contracted to the National League Phillies in 1896. However, by the early 20th century, the American Emerging League was looking to compete with NL supremacy and in 1901, Lajoie and dozens of former National League players have joined the American League. . . National League clubs challenged the legitimacy of contracts signed by players who jumped to another league, but Lajoie was eventually allowed to play for Connie Mack's track and field. During the season, Lajoie made an all-time mark in a single AHL season scoring the highest average hitting average.

Slick-hitting second baseman who was one of baseball's biggest players at the turn of the century, with 3,252 hits over the course of his 21-year career. The Cleveland Bronchos became the Cleveland Naps, making him the first athlete in baseball history to have a team named after him.
