He has been called "one of the greatest children's storytellers of the 20th century". His awards for his contributions to literature include the 1983 World Illusion Prize for Life Achievement and Child of the Year Author of the Year for the British Book Award 1990. In 2008, The Times ranked Dahl 16th on the list of "50 Greatest English Writers since 1945". However, he and his writings have been criticized for their anti-Semitism, racism, and deviations.

Among the many children's books written by this Welsh-born novelist, screenwriter, and fighter pilot are James and the Giant Peach, The BFG, and Matilda. Many of his best-selling stories, including The Witches, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Fantastic Mr. Fox, have been turned into feature pictures.
