Andrea Pia Yates is a former resident of Houston, Texas who confessed to drowning her 5 children in a bath on June 20, 2001. At one time she suffered from severe, disordered postpartum depression. Postpartum psychosis and schizophrenia. During the trial, she was represented by Houston criminal defense attorney George Parnham. Harris County Attorney Chuck Rosenthal called for the death penalty during the 2002 trial. His case placed the M'Naghten's Rule, as well as the Irresistible Impulse Test, a legal test of reason, under the close scrutiny of the public in the United States. She was found guilty of murder with the death penalty, but the jury refused to choose the death penalty. She was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 40 years. The sentence was overturned on appeal, due to false testimony by one of the qualified psychiatric witnesses. On July 26, 2006, a Texas jury at his retrial concluded Yates was not guilty for insane reasons.
